Play a round today and give a hand to charity

One thing that golf does better than almost any sport is something that the game never gets enough credit for: Raising funds for worthy charities.
You may be aware of how PGA Tour and LPGA events donate to charities in the areas of their tournaments. But the game also gives other organizations lots of opportunities to make money. And one of the best causes golf has embraced in the last few years is Patriot Golf Day.

What was a one-day fundraiser across the country to raise funds for scholarships just two years ago has developed into a four-day weekend with nearly 5,000 courses participating.

Those courses include 17 facilities in the Coachella Valley, from Palm Springs to Indio.

Patriot Golf Day is the main fundraiser for the Folds of Honor Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides post-secondary educational scholarships for the children and spouses of military men and women killed or disabled in the line of duty.

The concept is simple enough. Golfers playing at a participating golf course are asked to donate at least $1 to the Folds of Honor organization.

Through the first two years of the event, Patriot Golf Day raised more than $3 million for the scholarships.

With the event going through Monday, desert golfers can still participate at the following courses: Indian Wells Country Club, Indian Wells Golf Resort, Indian Palms Golf Club, Heritage Palms Golf Club, Shadow Hills Golf Club, The Golf Club at Terra Lago, Eagle Falls Golf Course, SilverRock Resort, Marriott's Desert Springs Resort, Desert Falls Country Club, Mountain Vista Golf Club, Desert Willow Golf Resort, Classic Club, Marriott's Shadow Ridge Resort, Indian Canyon Golf Resort, Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort and Seven Lakes Country Club.

Idea for giving

Patriot Golf Day was the idea of Dan Rooney, an Oklahoma Air National Guard pilot who served two tours of duty in Iraq. On a commercial flight one day, he saw the casket of a fallen serviceman taken off the plane, and saw the grieving young son of that serviceman. Something clicked in Rooney's head about doing something for the children of men and women killed or badly wounded in the military.
