The Golf Coaches Association of America announced that the St. Mary’s University men’s golf team has been named the Academic National Champion for the 2008-2009 school year.
This the first time St. Mary’s has earned this honor. The men on the golf team earned a cumulative 3.62 grade point average. The St. Mary’s team won for the NCAA Division II category. The golf team also earned special recognition status for having a team GPA of 3.5 or better.
The golf team members for that year were Preston Akromis, James Grant, Sam Jernigan, Jeff Rein, Alex Maurer and Matt Vela.
“This team truly exemplifies the term ‘student-athlete’ with their hard work and commitment on and off the course,” says St. Mary’s President Charles L. Cotrell.
The Rattlers golf team recently won their third Heartland Conference Tournament Championship.
St. Mary’s is a Catholic Marianist university in San Antonio.
