LUSS, Scotland (AP) — Former club pro champion Scott Hebert made a 20-foot birdie on the 18th hole Friday to complete a dominant opening day by the Americans, who took a 6-2 lead over Great Britain & Ireland in the PGA Cup.
Hebert won his fourball and foursome matches with different partners, while Sonny Skinner and Kyle Flinton were partners in two U.S. victories on The Carrick course at Loch Lomond. It was the largest lead for the Americans on the road in PGA Cup history.
The PGA Cup, patterned after the Ryder Cup, is for club professionals.
Hebert, of Traverse City, Mich., teamed with Craig Thomas of White Plains, N.Y., for a 3-and-2 victory in foursomes against Welshmen Andrew Barnett and James Lee.
Hebert had a tougher time in the afternoon. Playing fourballs with Steve Schneiter of Sandy, Utah., they were 1 up playing the 18th hole. Paul Wesselingh of England hit his approach to 3 feet, and Hebert pulled his 9-iron to the fringe. He made the uphill putt to halve the hole and win the match.
"I had a good read, read it right and I finally hit a good putt," Hebert said.
Skinner (Sylvester, Ga.) and Flinton (Edmond, Okla.) never saw the 18th hole in their matches. They closed out their foursomes match on the 13th hole, and followed with a 3-and-1 victory in fourballs.
The Americans have a 15-5-3 lead in the PGA Cup, which began in 1973.
