AREA ROUNDUP — Maroons tennis wins regional, moves on to states

Holland, MI —

The Holland Christian boys tennis team advanced to the state tournament by winning the Division 3 regional it hosted Friday.

The Maroons scored 26 points, followed by Allegan and Gull Lake, which tied for second with 19, to advance to state.

Zeeland West took fourth with 16 and Hamilton was fifth with 10 in the eight-team event.

“It’s a great feeling. Everybody made it through the first round, which was good,” Holland Christian senior David Buursma said. “We were confident we could make state and we know there are a lot of matches to go.”

Buursma, pictured right, fell in the semifinals at No. 1 singles, but the Maroons won four flight championships and made the finals in two others.

Ben Seabolt won the No. 2 singles title after beating Zeeland West’s Bryant Ruch 7-6, 6-2.

Holland Christian won the first three doubles championships.

Tyler Bratt and Kyle Weener won the No. 1 doubles title after topping Allegan’s Nate Jeffries and Nate Tibbitts 6-1, 6-2.

At No. 2 doubles, Joe Geenen and Olivier DeClercq beat Allegan’s Matt Madden and Taylor Robinson 6-3, 6-3.

Holland Christian’s Adam Zwier and Kyle Bratt beat Gull Lake’s Ryan Knapper and David Sutherland 6-0, 6-0 for the No. 3 doubles title.

Zeeland West’s lone flight championship came from Matt McInerney at No. 3 singles. He beat Holland Christian’s John Strikwerda 6-2, 6-1. Zeeland West’s Logan Scheur lost in the finals at No. 4 singles to Gull Lake’s Max Wittenberg 6-1, 6-1.

Hamilton’s Austin Essenburg and Logan White won the No. 4 doubles title by beating Holland Christian’s Jacob Lambers and Ryan Eldean 6-3, 6-4.

Boys soccer

Black River 6, Fruitport Calvary 1: The River Rats clinched at least a share of the Alliance League championship and improve to 13-1-1 overall (8-1 conference).

Alfredo Barrera and Harrison Clark each had two goals and one assist. Branden Beacham and Ty DeJong scored.

Volleyball

Black River 3, Fruitport Calvary Christian 0: The River Rats won 25-15, 25-23, 25-19 on Thursday.

Erin Doolittle led Black River (9-2, 8-1 Alliance League) with eight kills and 18 digs and Lauren Overkamp had 18 assists.

COLLEGE

Cross country

Men’s

Grand Valley State second at Michigan Intercollegiates: With three runners in the top 15 and 55 points, the Lakers finished second in the tournament hosted by Calvin College.

Tyler Emmorey was second in 25:09, Paul Zielinski was seventh in 25:27 and Ross Faasse finished 11th in 25:46 as Grand Valley finished second only to the University of Michigan (32 points).

The Wolverines took three of the top four spots to win the event.

Anthony Witt and Jeff Nordquist finished 17th and 18th with matching times of 25:54 to round out the Lakers’ top five.

The host Knights took fifth with Nick Kramer (22nd, 26:02) pacing the team.

Women's

Grand Valley wins Michigan Intercollegiates: The Lakers missed a cross country shutout by one point, scoring 16 points to win this tournament at Calvin College.

Megan Maceratini (17:58), Katherine McCarthy (18:03), Eileen Creutz (18:04) and Amy Kolin (18:05) took the top four spots for Grand Valley.

For Calvin, which finished second with 47 points, Jess Koster was the fifth-place finisher in 18:13, preventing Julia Nowak (18:24) and Grand Valley from completing the sweep.

Women’s golf

MIAA postponed: Friday’s scheduled first round of the MIAA women’s golf championships at Bedford Valley Country Club was postponed because of rain. The nine teams will play 18 holes of golf today beginning at 9 a.m. at Bedford Valley.

Also, the men’s final Jamboree, which was scheduled for Monday at Wuskowhan Players Club near Holland, has been moved to 1 p.m. Wednesday due to expected inclement weather.

Women’s soccer

Grand Valley State 4, Northern Michigan 1: At Marquette, the Lakers improved to 11-0-2 overall and 7-0-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with the win over the Wildcats (5-6-1, 3-4-1).

Grand Valley took a 3-0 halftime lead on goals by Katie Johnson, Jaleen Dingledine and Kayla Addison. Irie Dennis bumped the margin to 4-0 in the 51st minute before Celia Sturos spoiled the shutout bid of keeper Chelsea Parise, who only had to make four saves.

Volleyball

Hope 3, Alma 0: The Flying Dutch opened the second half of the conference season by sweeping the Scots at Alma 25-16, 25-22, 25-20.

The Flying Dutch improved to 19-2 overall and 9-0 in the MIAA.

Hope was led by Cassiday Bulthuis, who had 11 kills, 14 digs and two blocks. Jacie Fiedler had 11 blocks and Kara VandeGuchte had eight blocks and three kills.

Andrea Helminiak had 33 assists for the Flying Dutch.

Grand Valley State 3, Ashland 2: The Lakers improved to 11-7 overall and 7-3 in the GLIAC, beating the Oilers 17-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 15-13.

Whitney Tremain had 16 kills and three blocks to lead Grand Valley.
