Senior Neighbors: Oct. 15

Friday, Oct. 16: “The Soloist,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx. A true-life drama of a homeless, schizophrenic musician found playing a violin, beautifully, on two strings by journalist Steve Lopez. As their friendship progresses and Lopez starts on a quixotic quest to help Ayers, he gradually realizes it is not Ayers life being transformed, but his own. Raged PG 13.

Always seeking volunteers!
Each year the Wellesley Council on Aging receives calls from senior citizens who are in need of yard raking and/or snow shoveling services. While we do maintain and share a list of private pay resources for these services, many of the callers are on fixed incomes and cannot afford to pay for a professional service. We would be very grateful to hear from any individuals or groups who would be willing to volunteer their time to assist seniors in need of these requests. Please contact Gayle Thieme, Council on Aging director, at 781-235-3961.

Board games at the COA
Not many people have turned out for our weekly Wednesday afternoon board games activity (1-3:30 p.m. every Wednesday). However, We will continue to have space available for this activity every Wednesday afternoon (as it is something people were requesting) and hope that more people will turn out in the fall. If you own a particular game that you enjoy playing, please bring it with you. The COA has one Scrabble game, which will be available to those wishing to play. We would like people to call and let us know if they are interested so that we have a sense of how many people to set up for: 781-235-3961. This is a great way to pass the time, have some fun, meet new people and of course, enjoy refreshments provided by the COA!

Five Wishes
Do you know what Five Wishes are? Do your loved ones? Five Wishes is a publication produced by “Aging with Dignity,” which helps an individual clearly state his/her wishes if he/she were to become seriously ill. It is a living will that includes one’s personal, emotional, spiritual and medical wishes. Once it is filled out and properly signed, it is valid under Massachusetts state law. The form is official when the individual signs with two witnesses present. Massachusetts does not require it to be notarized. What are Five Wishes?
1.               The person I want to make care decisions for when I can’t.
2.               The kind of medical treatment I want or don’t want.
3.               How comfortable I want to be.
4.               How I want people to treat me.
5.               What I want my loved ones to know.
Five Wishes is now available for purchase at the Wellesley Council on Aging, 219 Washington St. The publication is $2 per copy. If you have questions or would like more information, or want to reserve a copy, please contact Laura Veligor, Health & Social Services Administrator, at 781-235-3961.

Should you change your Medicare plan?
YOU MAY NOT HAVE A CHOICE! Some Medicare health plans will no longer be offered next year, including Tufts Medicare Preferred PPO and PFFS. In October, your plans will be sending letters about changes for next year. Be sure to open any letters from your health plan, read them and save them. Although your plan may still be available next year, a different plan may be better for you. If you wish to change your health plan, or your Part D drug plan, you may do so during the Medicare Open Enrollment period between Nov. 15 and Dec. 31. Call your local SHINE counselor for help in understanding your choices at 781-235-3961.

Have fun and get fit with our new Wii program
Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club volunteers will be at the Council on Aging on Monday mornings, 9:30-11:30 a.m., to oversee our new weekly Wii activity. The Wii sports program includes virtual tennis, golf, baseball, bowling and boxing. Players hold a wireless console that detects three-dimensional motions, as they execute the same arm movements they would employ if swinging a racket or bat, rolling a ball or throwing a jab. The simulated action is played out on a television screen. Wii is not only a good time for seniors but helps with hand-eye coordination and also keeps seniors active without being too strenuous. A great way to get recreation and exercise, and we expect it to be very popular. All volunteers will be well versed in how the system works and will educate participants about each of the different games. Pre-register for the activity by calling the Council on Aging at 781-235-3961.

Rowe Physical Therapy
On Friday, Oct. 16, at 10 a.m., two physical therapists, Rosemary Blau MSPT and Sibylle Bosslet PT, from Rowe Physical Therapy, will be at the Council on Aging to discuss the most common physical disorders seen in elders. If you have tired, sore joints, a painful back or neck, shoulders that feel like they are stuck in your ears and you are tired after walking a short distance, this program is for you! Modern medicine has provided us with the opportunity to live much longer, but has not defined exactly how to maintain our quality of life. The two physical therapists will discuss the most common disorders and provide simple strategies on how to address them. To register, call 781-235-3961.

Long Term Care
On Friday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m., Dan Collins, an independent broker/agent will talk about customized plans for long-term care insurance. His background is in education and he feels it is important to educate seniors on the various plans that are available. Dan represents numerous carriers and his primary focus is on long-term care. There will be time for questions. To make a reservation call 781-235-3961.
