Normally, Saturday in the fall is reserved for football. But with the Razorbacks off this weekend — and the LPGA’s P&G Beauty NW Arkansas Championship going on at Pinnacle — I’ve got a little golf update for you.
We all know three players with Arkansas ties are in the event. The biggest name is Stacy Lewis. Then there’s former Hog Lucy Nunn. But it’s the third golfer — current Arkansas junior Kelli Shean — who has made the biggest impression so far.
Shean just wrapped up a strong second round, shooting 4 under par, to move to 1 over for the weekend. It came a day after she shot 5 over and was a longshot to make the cut. However, Shean’s strong day today gives her a realistic chance to play again tomorrow.
The cutline right now is projected at 1 over.
“I’m a little nervous about the cut,” Shean said right after her round. “I don’t know what the cutline is right now. But there’s still a lot of people going off. The wind is blowing a little bit. I don’t know, we’ll see what happens.”
Arkansas assistant coach Mike Adams watched Shean today, while head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor was out on other part of the course watching Lewis and Nunn. He said Shean hit the ball really well, helping to put herself in good position after Friday’s round.
“She’s been playing solid,” Adams said “We’ve expected big things from her. She was a little disappointed (Friday), but she was swinging well and just a few putts fall we knew she’d have a chance.”
Lewis and Nunn are both on the course right now. Lewis is at 2 over. Nunn is at 3 over.
